LITTLE VALLEY – Joining with other county governments across the state, members of the Cattaraugus County Legislature voted unanimously Wednesday to adopt a resolution urging the repeal of New York’s new gun control law.

The measure was presented by Legislator William Aiello of Olean after a recent meeting of the New York State Association of Counties, where he serves as second vice president. The meeting was a training involving members from Western New York and the Adirondacks. The regions banded together to pass a joint resolution calling for the appeal of the bill, Aiello said.

“We brought this bill back and decided to bring it forward as a show of support for what the New York Sheriffs Association, as well as the New York State Clerks Association, have said,” he explained. “The SAFE Act was pushed through and didn’t give anyone the chance to voice their opinion of it. It didn’t take into account law enforcement, among other things.”

The resolution says the gun control measure was “adopted outside the normal course of the business of the Legislature, under cover of darkness and after minimal if any discussion” and contains serious flaws.

Aiello said he has heard from several constituents and not one has been in support of the SAFE Act, either in principle or in the way in which it was created.

“This act makes criminals out of law-abiding citizens,”he said. “This is the reaction that is needed.”

A copy of the resolution will be sent to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, State Sen. Catherine Young, R-Olean, and Assemblyman Joseph Giglio, R-Gowanda.

In other action, Cattaraugus County Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb presented the members of the Legislature with keys that are no longer in use for the Cattaraugus County Jail. The keys, he said, were tokens for the hard work legislators had done to overhaul and replace cell locks and to add security measures..
