KATZ MARKS SAFE ACT ANNIVERSARY RENEWING CALLS FOR REPEAL

Assemblyman Steve Katz (R,C,I – Yorktown) is renewing his call ahead of the new legislative session to repeal the SAFE Act on the law’s one year anniversary.

“Last year, under the directive of Gov. Cuomo, we stayed here all night the first day of session to force through a gun law that drastically limited the freedoms of New Yorkers,” Katz said.  “This law focuses on the law-abiding citizen and pays no attention to the work of criminals and evil men who seek to irreparably damage our society in mass killing attacks. Over its first year, we’ve seen many New Yorkers arrested but zero lives saved.  What we need to do is recognize our failure with this legislation and focus on a mental-health-based approach by ensuring those who are ill are able to get the help they seek.”

Assemblyman Steve Katz, the Ranking Minority Member on the Mental Health Committee, is the author of Assembly Bill 5955, which would authorize a full repeal of the SAFE Act.
