Cuomo Defends NY SAFE Act

Buffalo, NY (WKBW) With election day less than three weeks away, Governor Andrew Cuomo released his memoir called “All Things Possible,” Tuesday.

Cuomo is defending his controversial SAFE Act.

7 Eyewitness News was given a matter of minutes to speak with the Governor. He answered on-topic questions about his book, only.

One of the major topics in the book is gun control and safety and the passage of the SAFE Act.

The Governor defended the controversial gun law, saying it’s “reasonable, balanced and measured.”

In his book, released Tuesday, the Governor said he was working to make a good law that would keep New Yorkers safer.

The governor defended how the law was passed, last year, writing in part, “It made sense to do gun legislation early, because we had such a narrow window of opportunity. We’d do it and get it out of the way.”

7 Eyewitness News reporter Ed Drantch asked Cuomo, if that played into what critics claims that the gun law was rushed through the state legislature.

“Yeah, the rushed through claim, Ed…we’ve been talking about gun legislation for 30 years we have been passing various forms of gun legislation for decades and decades. There’s nothing new about gun legislation, so there was no quick conversation,” Cuomo said.

Eyewitness News also asked the Governor about controlling the illegal trade and sale of weapons on the streets. He says you have to try.

Other lawmakers say it’s nearly impossible.
